pressed flowers
sgraffito /sɡraˈfiːtəʊ/
noun
a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour, typically done in plaster or stucco on walls, or in slip on ceramics before firing.
An experimental exercise done on stoneware slabs with white and black slip, for Wari Watai, led by ceramic artist Tanya Agarwal, art direction by Ram Sinam. The tiles were made to be installed into a wooden screen that acts as a room divider.
Hand-drawn leaves and flowers are translated onto the tile by gently carving and scratching into the semi dry stoneware surface, then bisque fired without a glaze. The contrast of black and white, along with a deboss, give depth to the character of the illustrations.
