mark making

Marks can be descriptive, expressive, conceptual, or symbolic. This collection began with inspiration from Indian maps made with no western influence from the book, Indian Maps and Plans, by Susan Gole.

Contemporary maps provide a glimpse of how people viewed the world around them in a way that no written account can do. That they are not accurate does not detract from their value as documents of historical, sociological, artistic and geographical importance.

I added a layer of information over this, using embroidery stitches of different densities and shape, and colour.

PROCESS

Another way to generate maps is the opensource street-mapping data used by Mapbox, which helped get a close to accurate information of our street in Bangalore, or important roads of Delhi. The blocks and paths are broken down as lines, dots and rectangles, and converted into running stitch marks, with a bit of monoprinting, to create an interesting and personal mural on the wall.

Lastly, as an ode to cartographers, mapping heights of a section of the himalayan range, is the countoured wallpaper.
